Well crafted articles are the lifeblood of this magazine. As a writer for Scientifica, you will work with the editorial team to develop meaningful content for a diverse audience. You are free to write about topics of your personal interest – although they should ideally be tied to the University of Miami community. Throughout the writing process you will have the opportunity to work with Scientifica designers and photographers to develop a spread and infographics to add an extra dimension to your writing. Important: Remember this is a popular science magazine – not a scientific journal. Effective science writing tells a story and often evokes an emotional response in the reader (pathos). It is engaging and makes science accessible by presenting data in the context of a relatable narrative.
Few aspects of a magazine can as drastically change the reader’s experience as design. As a designer for Scientifica, you will add an extra dimension to the spreads by communicating the ideas writers have in an artful manner in order to inspire, inform, and captivate the University of Miami community. The images, typography, and other visual elements you include in your spread should inspire your peers to want to continue reading. You will combine your passion for design and innovation with your love and dedication for the sciences. You will work with an outstanding group of writers and designers and explore the University of Miami’s scientific community.
Photography and art help capture and enhance the ideas and emotions conveyed by our writers in a creative and widely digestible manner. As a photographer or artist for Scientifica, you will add to the spreads by contributing art and graphics for the front cover, individual articles, or infographics. You will combine your passion for art and innovation with your love and dedication to the sciences. You will capture images and bring to life ideas that will spark intellectual conversations within our university community. You will work with an outstanding group of writers and designers and explore the University of Miami’s scientific community.
The path of an article from conception to publication is a long and often continuously evolving one. The person responsible for guiding this important journey is the editor. As an editor for Scientifica you will work with the writer to flesh out his/her ideas by offering constructive criticism on ideas, style, grammar and structure. Editors serve as a sounding board in order to bring the best version of an article to fruition. An editor also serves to maintain the credo of Scientifica, as a popular science magazine. Important: An editor should edit without changing the overall “voice” of the writer.
